AURORA VOTES 2018: HAROLD KIM WANTS TO CONTINUE STANDARD OF “SERVANT LEADERSHIP"

July 26, 2018

“Servant leadership is not just a flashy slogan or a tagline that I want to use to catch people’s attention, but that is really my motto in life...It was a tough decision. My family is still relatively young and I want to spend time with them, but I truly feel this is a calling, so to speak, and when you have a calling you have a passion. I feel like I am making a difference in the community.”

COUNCIL LEAVES THE DOOR OPEN TO DIVE DEEPER INTO JOC COSTS

October 18, 2017

INDEPENDENT AUDIT MOVES FORWARD ON JOINT OPERATIONS CENTRE

April 19, 2017

“I feel like we’re playing political football with this item...I mentioned over a year ago that we need clarification with the numbers, how much it cost, and let’s bring a report forward. We have had three renditions of this ...At first nobody wants to touch it and now everyone wants to touch it. How many times can we slice and dice the numbers?”  (Kim)

QUESTIONS RAISED OVER ACTUAL COSTS OF JOINT OPERATIONS CENTRE

February 1, 2017

"...it is like someone giving me a budget to buy eveningwear for the next few years and, during the process, I find I don’t have sufficient budget for a tie, cufflinks, shoes, and belt...However, I could buy a belt at a future date at a lower cost should my pants start falling down.” (Kim)

PROPOSED POLICY DISCRIMINATES AGAINST RELIGIOUS GROUPS, SAYS COUNCILLOR (KIM)

November 24, 2016

“The Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees the equal protection and equal benefit of the law to all... All the rights any other organization has in Town, I believe faith based organizations who do such great work, if they want to proclaim something through the municipality I can’t see why not...I am going to have to take a stand... these organizations, these entities and individuals...they serve the community without prejudice. For us to exclude them from proclamations we either exclude for all or [are] inclusive...” (Kim)

TOWN HALL WORKING TO REDUCE $185,000 DEFICIT TO ZERO

Octorber 26, 2016

“With any changes, there is a transition period. It is not going to work perfectly, but I daresay this year the budgeting from staff has been relatively good. We’re getting ahead of the curve so that we are fiscally more conservative. As a result, I think our budget situation in Aurora now, and in future years, are in good shape.” (Kim)

ALTERNATIVE WAYS OF PROVIDING “CULTURE” EXPLORED AT TOWN HALL

October 5, 2016

BILINGUAL SIGNS WOULD PROMOTE “INCLUSIVITY” SAY COUNCILLORS AND RESIDENTS

September 21, 2016

"...this motion is about building community and there is a fundamental question that we’re servicing here: What does a community look like and how do we want to get there? There seem to be three critical questions. One, does asking a business to have dual language signs necessarily represent intolerance? In my mind, on the contrary: it represents tolerance on both sides of the fence." (Kim)

MULTICULTURAL PRIDE SHOWCASED AT REBOOTED FESTIVAL

September 14, 2016

“I am ecstatic...It is the same feeling I had when I watched my first child being born: I felt like I did very little. Staff did almost all the work, but because it is Aurora’s first event, and especially because the theme is multiculturalism, it is a lot to do." (Kim)

BROCK’S BANTER: ON THE HORDES OF A DILEMMA

May 18, 2016

"Councillor Kim was right in his assessment, however, when he noted that buildings and amenities like these often provide a community with a sense of heritage and a “sense of home” but can sometimes veer close to “trying to force a structure to be something that it isn’t” – all in the name of sentimental value."

MAVRINAC LANDS MOVE TOWARDS PARK USE

March 9, 2016

“The Cash-in-Lieu that came out of this community should go back into this lot...It is not just an optics issue, there is a trust issue between the residents and the Town in terms of buying this land and selling it off to another school when there is an opportunity here to build something even better for the residents.” (Kim)

COUNCIL REMAINS SUPPORTIVE OF LAV PLACEMENT AT CENOTAPH

December 2, 2015

“When my parents first came here in the early 70s, they had a lot of factory jobs that were really painful. My dad worked at a cotton factory but was too short to pick the cotton, so he was let go... I don’t think I would want to have a symbol of his struggles... Is it the same example, or is it totally different? It might be totally different and I am still kind of weighing it because in the end I honour you guys." (Kim)

E-BOOKS STRAIN LIBRARY BUDGET – AND THEY WANT TO TURN THE PAGE

October 21, 2015

“With e-books, there are many different platforms. If all municipalities leverage [the Association of Municipalities of Ontario] and other organizations to team up and have one platform we would have huge buying power. If multinationals won’t cooperate, then we just have to lever up, get bigger and have larger economies of scale.” (Kim)

COUNCIL SETS “AGGRESSIVE” TARGET FOR CULTURAL PRECINCT VISION

Seprember 23. 2018

“Normally I am not a big proponent of consultants, especially when consultants are used in the same type of project over a series of years. This is not something new, and sometimes it takes several years for an idea or vision to absorb into people’s psyche and the feeling of comfort around it... Sometimes people want to move quickly. I feel in the last several weeks in discussing this, there is a political will and desire to take.” (Kim)

BUDGET NUMBERS “CONCERNING” FOR COUNCILLORS, MUNICIPAL STAFF

June 24, 2015

“I feel like Michael Corleone in Godfather III – just when you try to get out it kind of drags you back in...This is not a one-off incident. I know we have the Finance Advisory Committee and we’re going to move to a multi-year budget where we can smooth things out...we’re going to have to perhaps go line by line ...to ensure that we don’t have the access or shortfalls we can amortize over five years… We just need to do a better job going forward.” (Kim)

Brock Weir, The Auroran

“I feel uncomfortable having no say as a municipality over marijuana growing facilities. Given our experiences with Canada Post and other areas of jurisdiction, I think the best level of government that can protect its residents is at the municipal level...I think any industry where there is even a remote change of any health issues with residents, there is a regular checkup of those facilities."
